About Solar Permit Specialists
California Solar Permitting Experience
Since 2011
Solar Permit Specialists works with solar contractors on permit plan design, permit processing, plan-check corrections, placards, and supported utility, NEM, and interconnection applications. Since 2011, our team has supported more than 30,000 solar permits in California across hundreds of permitting jurisdictions.
Why SPS
Built Around Solar Contractors
Our workflow is designed around the information and technical input solar contractors and experienced installers already use in the field. SPS focuses on the design, permitting, and supported utility-application services within our scope while the contractor remains responsible for installation and the overall project.
We use modern automation and internal quality-control tools where useful to reduce avoidable errors and help assigned work stay on schedule—always backed by experienced professional review.

Contractor-Focused Workflow
Clear ownership, practical communication, and a workflow designed around the solar contractors and experienced installers we serve. When project volume changes, SPS helps contractors add experienced capacity without carrying permanent overhead.
California Jurisdiction Experience
California solar permitting is not uniform. With experience across more than 400 jurisdictions, our team understands the local requirements, plan check processes, and nuances that can affect a project from submittal through permit issuance.
One SPS Team
Solar design, permit processing, corrections, engineering coordination, and supported utility/NEM applications can stay coordinated through one experienced SPS team, with practical technology supporting—not replacing—professional review.
Built on Real Installation Experience
Founder John Lavender has worked in the solar industry since 1998, beginning with the design of off-grid solar systems for projects in Baja California. He later moved into solar installation throughout San Diego County, eventually serving as a lead installer. That hands-on background gives Solar Permit Specialists a practical perspective that goes beyond textbook design. We understand how plans translate into real installations, what crews need in the field, and how thoughtful permit planning can help a project move more smoothly from design through approval and installation.
